Coin Cabinet

Jobs like this don’t come around very often at all and I felt so privileged to be trusted with such a magnificent collection. The collector had already ordered the coins by origin and decided which drawer would house which. I measured each coin and compartment and created a series of digital layouts. I am so antiquated that I surprised myself in being able to do this. Next the layouts were adjusted so they aligned across each drawer and created a uniform logic. Now with the layouts approved I had them laser cut from 1.5mm grey boards. This gave a suitable depth to each circular recess to keep the coins neatly in its place.

Next came the mammoth task of covering each of the laser cut panels in cloth and adhering it to a lined backing board. I couldn’t have been happier with the cloth choice, bases in Blush with Coral for the recessed panels. BEAUTIFUL. In addition to the coins already collected we allowed space for the collection to grow by creating stacks of shallow trays in the cabinet’s deeper drawers. We also added a pocket in the lid. Three layers were particularly special as they contained antique coin purses alongside the coins found within them. My favourite of these was the collector’s Grandmother’s purse for which I hand cut a recess. A real treasure if ever there was one.
